Who runs this

Compare My Commute is run by Will Douglas. There is no company. Write to support@whdouglas.com.

What the site is

Compare My Commute is a shared house list. You can try it with no account, or sign in and share a list with people who are helping you look. The site shows drive times from houses to the places you care about.

It is in beta.

If you only try it

If you do not sign in, the houses and places you type stay in this browser, on this device. That is so you do not have to type them again. Clearing the browser data removes them. They are not in our database until you save the list.

We also remember your choice of light or dark, and English or Spanish, in this browser.

When you ask for drive times, those addresses go to our server and then to Google. That part is described below.

If you create an account

Signing in uses your email address. We send a link and a short code. There is no password. The message goes out through Supabase and Resend.

We store your email. If you set a name, we store that too, so the group can see who added a house or wrote a note.

What a list holds

People on the same list can see the shared parts, including each other's names. A place marked private stays with the person who added it.

  • The list name, and who created it
  • House addresses, optional names, listing links, and which site a link came from
  • Rent, bedrooms, and floor area, if someone types them
  • Places you drive to, the time of day, and a time limit if you set one
  • Votes, notes, and whether a house was toured
  • Who is on the list, and whether someone ruled a house out and why
  • Drive times we have already calculated for that list

Google

We ask Google for drive times, address suggestions as you type, the time zone of an address, and a simple map picture. We send the addresses you typed.

This happens on our server. The Google key stays there. It is not in the page your browser loads.

Google's own rules cover what Google does with those requests.

Short memories we keep

We use Upstash Redis so we do not call Google more than we need to, and so one person cannot use up the day's lookups.

We remember a drive time for about 24 hours. What we save is the minutes and the distance.

We also remember an address together with its time zone. That memory does not expire on its own.

We keep a short count of lookups from an IP address, for up to about two days.

If you ask to join a list, we keep your email, your name, and your account id for the list owner for about 30 days.

Cookies

We use cookies to keep you signed in, and to remember light or dark mode and English or Spanish.

We do not use advertising cookies. We do not sell your information.

Where the site runs

The site is hosted by Vercel. A host can see ordinary connection logs, such as an IP address and which page was requested.

The account and the lists are stored by Supabase.

Deletion

We do not automatically delete your account or your lists.

If you delete a list in the app, we mark it deleted and keep it so it can be restored. A ruled-out house stays on the list in that state, so the group remembers it. Neither one is erased on a timer.

To ask us to delete your account or a list, email support@whdouglas.com. Will Douglas reads that inbox.

Children

This site is for adults who are looking for a home. It is not meant for children.

Changes

If this page changes, the date at the top will change too.
